Solar potential on the Isle of Man

Start with the seasonal solar resource, then investigate your own roof and a proposed system. We have not verified an official Isle of Man rooftop-suitability map, so this guide does not assign roof ratings.

Seasonal context · 2001–2020

How sunlight changes through the year

At our representative Isle of Man model point, average daily solar energy on a horizontal surface ranges from 0.42 kWh/m² in DEC to 5.11 kWh/m² in JUN. These NASA POWER regional averages are solar energy arriving at the surface, not electricity generated by panels.

PVGIS is the European Commission’s separate modelling tool. Choose your own location, system size, slope, direction and losses. We do not send property addresses to it or calculate a quote.

How much electricity could panels generate?

Compare six Isle of Man regional PVGIS scenarios: monthly output, panel direction, tilt and mounting, with example system sizes. These use a point near Douglas, not a surveyed roof.

Use a model as a starting point

  1. In PVGIS, select the correct location. Enter a proposed system size, roof slope, direction and losses rather than accepting defaults as facts about your home.
  2. Keep the chosen inputs with the result. It is a modelled scenario, not measured generation or a guaranteed return.
  3. Ask an installer to inspect roof condition, usable area, shading and electrical arrangements. Local obstacles and site conditions need checking.
  4. Confirm ownership and any permissions with the relevant parties. For flats, shared roofs and rented homes, establish who can consent to work.
  5. Check current planning and connection requirements before committing, then compare itemised proposals and warranties.

Buying a home with solar panels?

Request installation documents, ownership or lease details, warranties and recorded generation. Use actual operating records where available. A regional solar average does not validate the existing installation.

Generation and savings are different: the value depends on consumption timing, tariffs, export arrangements and total costs. We do not publish a generic payback figure.
